How do I use drapery pins with an unpleated drapery panel?

I am trying to put up unpleated velvet drapes with the hooks that pin on.
If I stick the pins directly into the fabric at the header won’t the fabric rip eventually if I open & close the drapes a lot? Do I have to use pleating tape first even though I don’t want them to be pleated?
I can’t find instructions anywhere on how to do this!
